Taconic Lakefront

This project, set within the Taconic Mountains, focuses on one of the region's most pristine freshwater ecosystems. Since 2017, our team has collaborated with property owners on the southern end to create high-quality habitats and promote sustainable, low-impact development. On the northern end, we employed innovative strategies to restore and enhance the local environment, benefiting wildlife, plant life, and the surrounding community.

Our journey began with a comprehensive resource inventory to identify critical aspects of the ecosystem to protect and utilize. The freshwater system and its nearby pond emerged as the backbone of the region’s ecological system, supporting a vast array of wildlife and plant species. To safeguard these water bodies during construction, we implemented erosion control measures, including silt barriers and coir logs. These biodegradable materials effectively prevented construction runoff from polluting the lake and pond.

The freshwater system also served as a vital resource for sustainable development. For extensive landscape irrigation, we utilized submersible water pumps to draw water from the lake and pond, avoiding strain on residential wells. This approach supported large-scale plantings, including meadows, trees, and garden beds. Additionally, abundant onsite stone from construction excavation was repurposed into retaining walls, steps, and ornamental features, minimizing costs and highlighting our commitment to using materials that harmonize with the environment.

The pond’s restoration was a centerpiece of our efforts. Years of organic decomposition and poor water circulation had led to stagnation, limiting its ecological health. In autumn 2021, we initiated a multifaceted restoration plan. Dredging removed accumulated sediment to improve water quality and flow, while strategic planting introduced new species to support biodiversity. A long-term stewardship plan was implemented to monitor and maintain the health of the area, and enhancements were made to create habitats for both aquatic and terrestrial species.

Construction activities often leave the landscape barren, but our team transformed degraded areas into vibrant ecosystems. Starting in autumn 2020, we applied soil amendments, including a layer of recycled paper to suppress weeds, followed by a compost/topsoil mix and annual rye seed. This approach created a nurturing environment for perennial wildflowers, such as coneflowers and butterfly weed, which we planted the following spring. Over time, these robust native species required minimal maintenance, establishing a self-sustaining meadow.

We prioritize creating spaces that encourage human connection with their surroundings. At this location, we designed gathering spaces, walkways, gardens, and woodland trails to enhance the experience of living amidst a serene environment. The steep banks surrounding the glacial lake presented unique challenges. We crafted a main staircase from the house to the lakeshore, bordered by lush plantings like inkberry, chokeberry, and fragrant sumac. Regional bluestone flagstone steps, accented with large boulders, provided both functionality and aesthetic appeal. Dry-laid patios and retaining walls complemented the contours of the site, creating inviting spaces to gather and enjoy the view.

The proximity of this project site to a popular hiking trail network inspired the development of woodland paths that highlight wetlands, streams, and scenic vistas. Trail-building efforts focused on minimal environmental disruption while emphasizing the beauty of the surroundings. Upland trails led to mountain laurel groves and panoramic views, while lowland paths traversed streams and wetlands. By incorporating onsite materials, like logs for bridges and stone for steps, we created accessible and sustainable trails.

Our mission is to implement projects that preserve and restore ecosystems while enhancing human experiences. The transformation achieved at this location demonstrates the power of holistic, environmentally conscious design. Our efforts have created thriving habitats for wildlife and plant life, while offering residents and visitors a place to connect with their surroundings in all its beauty.
